Teaching
Professor MacLean teaches pharmacy management and entrepreneurial pharmacy. She is committed to training students to work effectively in teams that care for patients in novel ways. She is proud to be teaching future pharmacists, who will be the medication experts, how to collaborate with physicians and other health care providers to prescribe medications for 21 minor ailments and a variety of common conditions.
Mentoring
MacLean is dedicated to mentoring and teaching student pharmacists about management, leadership and ownership. In this capacity, with her colleague Dr. William Fassett, she has worked with scores of students in business plan development. WSU students consistently place first or second in the national student business plan competition sponsored by the National Community Pharmacy Association.
Research
MacLean’s research focuses on patients with diabetes. Her current research project is funded by the United States Department of Agriculture through a Rural Health and Safety Grant. Information about this research follows:
Telephone Coaching to Improve Diabetes Self-Management for Rural Residents
Cost-effective strategies are desperately needed to improve self-management of diabetes and reduce costly and painful diabetic complications in rural areas where the rates of diabetes are unusually high. Through a partnership between the Washington State University (WSU) College of Pharmacy and WSU Extension, we propose to test a low-cost method to improve self-management of diabetes among rural residents with diabetes. An 8-week telephone-coaching program will augment Extension’s diabetes education program, On the Road to Living Well with Diabetes.
Telephone coaching has been shown to be an effective way to support individuals with diabetes and other health problems. Telephone Coaches will be selected from students in the WSU Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) program who have completed a health communications class and who have received additional training in diabetes management, motivational interviewing and managing telephone coaching.
Telephone Coaches will emphasize supporting lifestyle modifications for successful management of the daily diabetes routines of monitoring blood sugar, taking prescribed medications, following diet and exercise regimes, and getting regular medical care. This project will test a powerful, effective, and low-cost method for improving self-management of diabetes and reducing the incidence of diabetic complications and health care costs.
Additional Information
MacLean is a pharmacist, a certified diabetes educator and a clinical professor with the Washington State University College of Pharmacy. Currently, she serves as associate dean for advancement.
As the past co-owner of Jones Pharmacy in Spokane, Washington, she continues to be vitally interested in community pharmacy and community pharmacy residencies. Working to change the way pharmacy is practiced, she has developed and implemented niches to better serve patients. The Jones rapid strep testing service was one of the first in the nation to be implemented in a community pharmacy.
A past-president of the Washington State Pharmacists Association, she is active in state and national pharmacy organizations. She continues to be involved with new and evolving practice models for community pharmacy through service on the National Community Pharmacy Association (NCPA) national steering committees. Her current commitment is with the Patient-Centered Pharmacist Care section. NCPA recognized her contributions by awarding her the National Preceptor of the Year designation and naming her the 2007 Faculty Liaison of the Year. In May 2009 she received the “Student’s Choice Award for Excellence in Teaching” for the Washington State University Campus co-located in Spokane.
